The Season of Lent 2008

Dear People of the Pacifica Synod,

I hope the grace of God is overpowering for you each day during this season of Lent.

In this packet is the promised promotional B2B2B materials regarding the new home base for the Pacifica Synod, a place that will be known as the Lutheran Center for Mission & Learning. The first brochure tells a bit of that story. These same documents may be downloaded from the www.pacificasynod.org website and can be reprinted in 8 ½ x 11" or 11 x 17." The second brochure tells the story of our Companion Synod in Ethiopia, the story of their new building project and how Pacifica is connecting the two building projects together. We have raised significant dollars to get us well on the way with our new Center, but now we are at the fund-raising phase that seeks a one-time donation from every member of the Pacifica Synod. We know that if every Pacifica congregation challenged its membership to give $20 per member for this one-time effort, we would have our new building debt free; we would build the new building in Ethiopia, and we would scholarship the training of hundreds of lay evangelists in our companion synod for the next several years. After raising most of the funds for the new Synod Center from generous individual contributors, to complete this project and undertake the mission opportunity in Ethiopia, we now want to give every member an opportunity to offer a gift of any size, with the hopes that more than 50,000 baptized members within the Pacifica Synod will contribute a total of at least $1,000,000. You can read much more about this in the brochures in this package.

We are asking you, as the leaders of the congregation and as B2B2B teams, to take the following or similar steps:

take a few minutes to read this material, pause for reflection, and pray about this request

make you own financial commitment to B2B2B and be ready to share it with your congregation

present this opportunity to your Church Council for their support and approval

ask each Council member to make a B2B2B commitment for themselves and their families

appoint a B2B2B team of five or more people to carry this effort into your congregation

set a minimum monetary goal for your congregation to raise for B2B2B

make a B2B2B thermometer showing the congregation how the fundraising is happening

print some promotional materials each week from the synod website and tell the stories

share with your congregation how the pastoral staff and Church Council have made commitments

watch for more materials on the website, on email, and from your fax machine

record the name of every donor so the synod may recognize each gift that is given

think of some creative and enjoyable ways to help raise the funds (dinner, concert, carwash)

include the children and the youth

know that the name of every donor will become part of a permanent donor's display at the Center

invite someone to come to your congregation as a guest speaker to help tell the B2B2B stories

please send or fax the B2B2B information page to the Pacifica Synod

feel free to call or e-mail for more information

Thank you for your partnership. May the light of Christ shine brightly over you these days! Bishop Murray D. Finck and the Planning Team of the Lutheran Center for Mission & Learning

Good Stewardship of Synod Resources
Currently, the Pacifica Synod is leasing its offices. We are not receiving any investment or long- term return for the ministry dollars we annually spend for synod offices and facilities.
The goal is to raise enough funds to pay for the buildings and remodeling, and to also establish an endowment fund for utilities, maintenance and improvements. By meeting this goal, the Synod will be able to utilize every dollar of mission support from our synod's congregations for Synod programs and staffing, and for the work of the larger church [ELCA Mission Support, benevolence for our agencies and institutions, namely our seminaries and universities, campus ministry, camping ministry, retirement homes, homes for the aging, social services, etc.]

Community Service and Ministry
To the local community as adequate facilities, meeting rooms and devotional areas will be available in that part of Orange County
Possible site for hosting meetings and events for ecumenical gatherings, advocacy gatherings, seminars and convocations.

Energy Efficient and Ready for Emergencies
In reconstruction, the building was made as "green" as possible with all new insulation, new roofing materials, dual-pane tempered glass, water saving fixtures and efficiency electrical fixtures.
The Center for Mission & Learning is also ready to be a control center in the case of emergencies with back-up generator for electricity, and ample supplies of emergency food, water and equipment. From its location, trained leaders with Inter-Lutheran Emergency Response Team will be able to gather, meet and direct emergency response.
